Treehugger says – America: Get Off Your Butt and Start Walking

This is not what we look like!

I used to be a runner and sometimes, when I am not injured and more motivated, I still do run but mostly I walk and not just to the fridge for a snack during Oprah, thanks. Every weekday for the past three years I have been walking with wonderful group of friends. We walk for an hour or so (some with our dogs) and we talk the entire time (shocking, I know)!  It is a group of energetic, smart and resourceful women and there are a few regulars but many drop-ins as work/family schedules allow.  The group energy makes the walk go faster and is tremendously useful from an informational standpoint as well.  We dish, share, laugh, plan for civic and neighborhood events, conspire (for good, of course) and inspire. What we talk about is our Vegas (you know, “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas?”) because we are all Suburban Moms so far from any Vegas-like activity that this makes us laugh.

I also walk with a different group of equally delightful friends on the weekend (when I am up early enough) and that is a six-mile walk that is just as fun. We talk and laugh our way through this intense work-out that goes by in a flash. So grab a friend or two or three and put on your sneaks and walk. Give yourself a great mental and physical health boost.

Not like this, either!

I wanted to send it out to all of my walking friends – good for us!

Going Green All Week – Come on, it’s great for the planet and even better for you.

 capability mom flowers on step

For Earth Day…umm, Week  – here are some green sites that I really like. The flowers are on my front step, ready to be planted. This is a going to be a clean-up the yard and planting day. No perennials yet, too cold here.

Capability Green - Ingredients for a black bean burger

Capability Green  We found each other on Facebook because of the shared Capability thing. She has great recipes and a new blog. She posted about the hideous double down as well but is so amazing that she was inspired to make a black bean burger stuffed with spinach! Gorgeous photos and food.

Going Green Mama  Just found this site – great tips on going green without going crazy –  funny, great recipes, tips, links and give-aways.

TreeHugger – can’t get much greener than this site, and from National Geographic their Green Guide for Everyday Living. Happy Earth Day Week!

All about greening your lunchbox, great (not green) treats and cleaner, greener toothbrushes

Just found these (in O Magazine – although I have seen them in small shops, too)  Lunchskins – great reusable lunch bags created by moms who were appalled at how many plastic sandwich bags they were using (http://www.3greenmoms.com). I have heard about but had not seen the wave of plastic bag video and I found some great time sucks ones at Treehugger. Treehugger is an amazing resource for all things green. For some reason I got stuck on this:  7 Weird, Yet Helpful Green Tips from Celebrities…maybe because Adrian Grenier was one of them?

Here is the pic I tried to find the other day – found it on Garden Girl – a great local skincare company. Love their stuff – find it at local favorite store – Just Next Door -or on-line.

Here is a great brownie recipe to go in those new bags:

It is the one I talk about in Rewards for Mom.  Really very good – great frozen, too. From Verbatim blog

Ingredients:

2 sticks butter
1 12-oz. bag semisweet chocolate chips
1 1/2 cups sugar
4 large eggs
1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons vanilla
dash salt

Preheat oven to 300°. Grease a 9 x 13 pan. Melt butter and chocolate chips together in the microwave and add remaining ingredients and mix well. Pour into prepared pan.

Bake for 45 minutes. Cut when still hot into small squares, but then let them cool for a few minutes before taking them out of the pan. Then you freeze some of them. You will probably eat a few of them still warm, not that I would…

Now – go brush your teeth with a recycled toothbrush from Preserve that you can mail back to them for even further recycling!
