Sesame Street pulls Katy Perry video with Elmo

When I first heard about this – I paid attention but minimally (my kids are past Sesame Street) but then I came across it again on the Wall Street Journal blog,The Juggle which led me to The Speakeasy which led me to this video (Yes, all before the caffeine kicked in) and decided to weigh in.

Now, I love Sesame Street. No, really, I do. I love how they give a nod to the grown-ups watching with their children (which you are supposed to be doing) and how they are inclusive and talented and great at teaching numbers and letters and life lessons.  I love how the children on the show are real and not Barney-ified.  Two of my favorite songs are still Put Down the Duckie and Dance Myself to Sleep. Great songs. Really.

I was not happy when I heard a rumor that  Cookie Monster was to become Veggie Monster (this turned out to be an urban myth (see Snopes) and that Bert and Ernie couldn’t be roommates anymore because there was the perception that they were gay (they are puppets, people.) refuted here on, again, Snopes. So I know that Sesame Street has a fair share of detractors or randoms that will say anything to further their own agenda but I did not expect them (Sesame Street) to cave on something like this. Yes, Katy Perry has pin-up girl looks but she is not pushing the envelope here.

Sesame Workshop’s full statement:

“Sesame Street has a long history of working with celebrities across all genres, including athletes, actors, musicians and artists.  Sesame Street has always been written on two levels, for the child and adult.  We use parodies and celebrity segments to interest adults in the show because we know that a child learns best when co-viewing with a parent or care-giver.  We also value our viewer’s opinions and particularly those of parents.  In light of the feedback we’ve received on the Katy Perry music video which was released on You Tube only, we have decided we will not air the segment on the television broadcast of Sesame Street, which is aimed at preschoolers.  Katy Perry fans will still be able to view the video on You Tube.”

Here is the video – you be the judge.

A question was posed to me – What about Miss Piggy? Her clothes are sometimes revealing, too and there is that odd “wardrobe malfunction” pic at Betty Confidential that I didn’t want to post (yes, I do know that she, too, is a puppet). SF Gate – The Mommy Files had a nice take on this, too.

I think Katy Perry looked lovely, sang a sweet song with a lovable puppet and was a good sport – even to her tweet that her playdate with Elmo was cut short.
