There are so many worthy organizations it can be overwhelming to choose which ones to support, and I find the older I get, the more opportunities I have (except please, do not call me while I am making dinner. You know, just skip the call all together, I never like the call). I like to donate directly to the organization (usually one my family and I have decided on together, talked about and researched) and I also like to support friends who are involved in fundraising, whether swimming laps, walking, biking, running or (hope against hope) selling sweets.
I also like to support businesses that donate proceeds (have always loved Newman’s for that) to a charitable cause. As I am sure you know, as the pink is ubiquitous, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and there is no shortage of ways to donate. I recently learned about an organization doing great work. It’s the Look Good Feel Better® program and for the past two decades it has been helping people undergoing cancer treatment by providing free workshops, staffed by local expert volunteers offering lessons on how to apply cosmetics and hair accessories to help cope with the appearance side effects of cancer treatment.
MISSION: Look Good Feel Better is dedicated to improving the self-esteem and quality of life of people undergoing treatment for cancer. It is our aim to improve their self-image and appearance through complimentary group, individual, and self-help beauty sessions that create a sense of support, confidence, courage, and community.
Look Good Feel Better® is partnering with several lovely companies, like Philosophy, LashControl, and Boob Tube and you can help by purchasing these products. Go give your skin, your lashes or your decolletage a boost and do some good at the same time.
Look Good Feel Better Overview
Workshops are FREE, available in all 50 states, and staffed by local expert volunteers that offer lessons in how to apply cosmetics and hair accessories that help address the changes in skin and hair loss that often accompany cancer treatment, as well as tips on wardrobe/styling to help mask weight changes, surgical alterations, and other changes. Look Good Feel Better is dedicated to changing the way people with cancer approach their disease, reminding them that they are beautiful inside AND out. The program helps women regain confidence some normalcy in a life that is by no means normal.
