Pragmatic Mom has a way of pulling together an outfit that is chic and elegant…maybe it is because she is an enviable size –I don’t know…a double zero? Nope, that’s not entirely it…she just looks great always. I, on the other hand, need a little coaxing to be my put together self – so much so that my friends inordinately praise me when I do – subtle, aren’t they?
I also have a cheap gene – as in I always buy on sale, always (I am sure this has no impact on my put together-ability). I teethed in the aisles of Marshall’s and Filene’s Basement and when, at the pinnacle of my career, I worked in the Risk Management department of the Mothership, the Basement, my mother could not have been prouder than if I won the Nobel (good thing, too, since there is no effing chance of that happening). I also worked at (the now defunct) Charles Sumner clothing store on Newbury Street (mostly for the discount and a somewhat weak promise of a trip to Paris, truth be told), so I have been surrounded by nice things and know that they do not make you nicer, smarter, or prettier (okay, some of them make you prettier). While I can appreciate gorgeous workmanship, I am unprepared to pay retail and so I don’t. What do I do? You will find me in the aisles of my favorite discount stores (Old Navy and Target included) and at sales like Friends and Family at Bloomingdales (sometimes) and Saks (going on now) and small stores (yes, call them boutiques) that have gorgeous (but expensive) items that get marked down at the end of the season. That’s when I head out and here is where my inside information comes in :
Tess and Carlos (both locations: Newton and Cambridge) are having a warehouse sale this weekend (dates: April 29, April 30 and May 1). Have you been in? You should – lots of fabulous designer clothes and on sale (75% off – or, if you are in the know – Buy 4 items and it is 80% off – Sweet!) Now this is how I like to shop!
So Pragmatic Mom and I went through the sale stuff in Newton and it is great (Sigh. Yes, there is some left for you). There is a slew of gorgeous cashmere sweaters; light ones for Spring (tanks, short sleeved and light as air) and more substantial ones for Fall. Buy an end of season sweater now and stash it away and you will have a new sweater for next year – smart! These are timeless pieces – you will love the selection. Great dresses, too – love this Etro dress and this super soft cashmere dress from Armand Diradourian and wonderful skirts and tops, perfect for work. Pragmatic Mom has some more photos and prices on her site – here – but there are many more items that we did not photograph. We were busy…um…shopping actually.
The store is big and clean and spare looking – lots of concrete and sort of minimalist but the vibe is energetic and upbeat – the sales staff will help if you like or leave you alone (which is my preferred mode of shopping) unless you ask for help. Your choice – no pressure, just a great sale on gorgeous designer clothes from Etro, Jil Sander, Narciso Rodriguez, Vivienne Westwood and Paul Smith (to name a few). Shop for Mother’s Day for your mom or yourself – I think it is important to look good on Mother’s Day, at least.

Sshh! 80% off if you buy 4 items, believe me, it’s easy to do. There will also be a $250 gift certificate you can win – just leave your name and email address (in the stores) to win!
